THE BIG SIX

The Premier League....and the claim for the Top Six manager.

So I was reading through the sports section (my favourite piece of the news), and continue to see how Mourinho and Manchester United are in a crisis. How he has suddenly become the favourite for the sack, and how he can firmly be regarded as past his prime (the club too). There's so much praise for his rivals... I decided to look closer.

1: Jurgen Klopp. This is the darling of the English press. The coach who reportedly turned down United's approach in favour of Liverpool, because they didn't have a clear plan. And on the 8th of October, it would be three years of achieving NOTHING for Liverpool FC. No trophies. Just three final losses to show for all his efforts. Add that to the fact that Liverpool finished lower than United on the league table last year, and I can't see how his wisdom in choosing Liverfool FC has filled us (United fans, if you were wondering) with regret. His finest career moments would be the two (2) Bundelisga titles with Dortmund and ANOTHER Champions league final defeat.

2: Mauricio Pochettino a.k.a the ONE who got away. According to popular folklore, this is the coach United wanted all along. Even Sir Alex said so (I don't know if that's before or after he decided Moyes was the CHOSEN one). However, I believe this is his fifth year at Spurs....with an empty cabinet to show. Keep telling me about how he has developed players, and finished in the top four consistently. Like we would care about that, more than the fact that it's been over a decade Spurs were celebrating any kind of success. I guess we will wait a little more, to mention his finest moments (else you're talking about winning against Madrid at the UCL group stages....and crashing out, while Madrid go on and win the competition).

3: Maurizio Sarri. Pep Guardiola calls him the "best coach in the world".... I disagree. He didn't get started until he left the banking sector at 40....& he's more popular for being a chain-smoker, than a serial winner. Needless to say, he has a grand total of ZERO trophies to show for all his time in the dressing room and on the touch line. Let's not waste further space getting the Chelsea fans angry.

4: Unai Emery. Now, the discussion probably gets more interesting. Operating on a budget lower than his rivals, he made consistent progress at La Liga with Sevilla and "managed" to win the UEFA Europa league THREE times in a row. Given a chance with PSG, he delivered seven (7) domestic trophies in two (2) years....only losing his job because he didn't do so well in Europe (ironic, because that's why he was hired in the first place....his European experience).

5: Pep Guardiola. Hate him all you like (I particularly happen to be one of the enemies), you can't help but admit.... he's a TOP coach. You could be tempted to even say, he's the BEST coach in the world right now. I won't be one to argue, because I can see the statistics and no matter how much I hate to admit, those are the statistics of a serial winner.

•7 league titles in three different countries.
•2 UCL trophies with Barcelona
•Treble winner with Barcelona
•100pts with Manchester City
.....and a host of other cup trophies.

6: Jose Mourinho...finally, we discuss the man of the hour. The serial loser. The one who sulks. Always throwing his players under the bus...same bus he parks in front of his goal to keep opposition strikers away. The one who went last season without a trophy (an amazing feat achieved by his great rival, Guardiola, just the year before). Obviously, he's the only one of the top six managers in England who doesn't deserve to be called a top coach. Haters look away now.....

•8 league titles in four countries
•2 UCL trophies with Porto & Inter
•2 UEFA Europa league titles with Porto and Manchester United
•Treble winner with Inter
•100 points with Real Madrid
....& a host of other cup trophies.

There must be some other reason he's regarded as the favourite to be sacked before December, because in his short time in England, he has managed to win more trophies than Mrs Klopp and Pochettino put together. As a matter of fact, his two (he would be quick to say three) trophies have only been matched by Mr Guardiola and a certain, Mr Conte. One of the two men has been hailed as the saviour of English football....& the other has been relieved of his job, in favour of an older Italian flavour of the month with ZERO trophies to show why he's regarded the best coach in the world. Now, it makes sense to me.... I don't think we can rate the world's best coaches by the trophies they win. It's all about who's team plays the football that appeals the most to our amateur viewers eyes.

Welcome to the world of the English Premier League....& the biased pundits. They say Sir Alex spoilt the Manchester United fans, but the ones old enough to know would be quick to remind how many years it took the legendary boss to win his first trophy. Be careful what you wish for....the sack race doesn't just end an era. It marks the beginning of another.

I'm off to have a beer.... see y'all later. Cheers🍻
