Fashion is Love
Written by Michael Obiomah
Hello,good morning everyone
I wonder when we are going to start these articles with a prayer, (I just don't want to pray in the wrong religion, and sideline some of my readers)....someone asked. I have previously pointed out, that my religion is LOVE. If we could all live in love,we would exist happily in this world and probably die with a smile assured of peace hereafter.
Talking about love, the endgame for most lovers is the sacrament of marriage. "If you really love me,put a ring on it",someone sang ...& while I'm not here to debate the essence of marriage, I will talk about the wedding ceremony for a minute. I love to attend wedding parties (don't care much for the recital of rites beforehand) and as much as the cake and booze might entice me, I really enjoy looking at fashion trends at such ceremonies. Nigerian people love to dress up,and my word, there are a LOT of beautiful people at weddings. It's like we sit with the "tailor" all week, just to get ready for the weekend party.
I was just in a discussion with my cousin this morning, and realised that Nigerian fashion is finally on the level where the world should come take notice. Back in the 80's, both our mothers were fashion designers (not just your average tailor). We had magazines we got styles from, we all learned from our youth to cut and sew clothes. His Mum,started a fashion school (Afemai school of Fashion) which stands to this very day. My Mum diversified, but her first child didn't. My sister took it up a notch, and is a serious fashion designer in her own right now.
Matter of fact, there are a lot of respectable designers now who have roots in Benin-City. TribalMark. Caesar's Couture. Oscarwise. Mai Atafo (born in the West, but originally from Edo state). Deizy. Lee Clothier & so many more. These people are not your average tailor, and in some cases like Caesar's can offer you Bespoke clothing that can rival any brand worldwide. We hear so much about the movies & music coming out of Nigeria, but I think we need to start paying attention to the fashion too.
Jerry Ogbodo (@swankyjerry) is one of my favourite people in this country. His style is off the hook, and what he does for Juliet Ibrahim is simply amazing. You might think, I don't need a stylist...me sef,I sabi fashion. You're wrong. Get professional help today, and watch people say "WOW" when you enter the room. Trust me,your ego can never take enough boosting, and being "swanky" is as good an ego-boost as you can find anywhere.
This has inspired me, we are gonna plot a fashion exhibition pretty soon...so y'all be prepared. Talking about preparedness, I am BACK. Full health restored. Batteries at 100%. Benin-City,your pub crawler is coming out with a vengeance this weekend (we begin on Wednesday, the weekend)....so if your spot ain't banging, we would report it. If you're one of my favourite spots, you know I'd see you soon 😉.
Have a great day my people. Say hello to our #WCW, the amazing Juliet Ibrahim (styled by SwankyJerry).... Ciao
