Throwback, Dating & Social Media
Written by Michael Obiomah
I remember when I was back in the university, and we first started toasting girls. They'll give you the number to their room at the hostel (or boy's quarters),and you had to keep making the long walk over to go say hello. For those of us in that generation, you'll remember how there's always a pen and some writing paper to leave notes if you meet them absent. Sometimes, you'll even drop a note saying "I came to see you at 3pm,met your absence ...will be back by 6pm". And when you return at 6pm,the note would be there. Untouched. That's how difficult it was to get in touch with a girl you like...I am definitely getting old,cos this sounds like the Stone Age. LOL.
Even when we started using phones (those big Sony Ericsson phones, that billed per minute for calls),it was always gonna be difficult to get a hold of a girl if she didn't want you to. How many times you fit even afford to de call her sef? With your small credit.
Fast forward to the New Age,and we have social media. Facebook, Whatsapp, Snapchat, Instagram...they all have storylines. In some instances, you can tell when the person is even posting old posts (cos they'll have dates). Now you can get a pretty good idea where the girl you want to see is,right now. Now we can maintain long-distance relationships via video calls, people even go and get life partners from dating sites.
Wow....the world has really changed. Girls don't even go to the red light district to hustle no more, they make twerking videos and post them on Instagram. InstaMessage is a "hookup" zone. As much as we embrace change,it has also led to a loss of some traditional values...but who am I to judge?
It's Thursday again, time for some Throwback ....do you remember what it meant to have a good time, back in the day? With our baggy jeans and throwback jerseys? Listening to some real hip-hop music? We all wanted to be rappers. Our parents always insisted we went to school first though. Things have really changed. Now all we hear is 9ja music, all the young boys want to be yahoo boys and all the girls want to be slay queens. School is now an afterthought, "no be everybody wey go school, get money". Parents are even asking 20 year old kids for money now ..."no be your mate de drive Venza"?
Well, that's all from me today....off to get some hot cocoa, this cold won't ease up. Have a great weekend ahead... Cheers🍷
