The Bandwagon Effect

Written by Michael Obiomah

"Imitation is the greatest form of flattery"

Growing up,my folks showed me a flaw in Nigerian character (that I'm sure you can all relate to). Start up a profitable business (like even frying akara) and all your neighbors would jump on the bandwagon, to prove that you have no particular skill that sets you apart. Eventually, supply exceeds demands....and we all suffer.

Let's relate that to our club business. Three guys watching on the outside start thinking "see how these clubs are making money, and yet we have so much money and no business. Let's invest in opening one"....& they do. Now,they have no experience as to how it works and decide the smartest move would be to poach management from an existing club. Identifying the key personnel to poach is tricky (as you could later find that the "manager" isn't the brain behind the success),and could just result in a recycling of ideas "that's how we made Club X successful". There's no universal formula for success, but an injection of fresh ideas is more important than imitation of a rival's success.

From my "Club crawl" last night,I just noticed that the major difference between any two clubs in Benin-City is location. The modus operandi "practically" stays the same... hence the need to do things differently. Luckily,we bring you PROOF shortly that things can be different and yet so good.

There's one place I feel like a HERO,and that's on the football pitch. Talking football....

Did anyone warn you about drinking on an empty stomach? Well,l did get the memo and I realise that I feel much fresher in the mornings because I'm able to get a good meal in...right before I go on an alcoholic binge. Just curious, why name your lounge "The Office"? I guess it's a ploy to make us regulars feel obliged to attend. See y'all at 3pm.

Well, got to go now. There's one place I feel like a HERO,and that's on the football pitch. Talking football....any hope for the colonial masters? History would remember their "heroics" at this World Cup,but it would be a sad one if they didn't get any medals. One player sure to go home with something bulging in his suitcase though should be Captain Kane. Great guy.
