Rivalry is Good

Written by Michael Obiomah

Rivalry...."competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field".

This is an essential part of human nature. From time immemorial, people have been programmed to compete with one another. It could be for the love of your parents (sibling rivalry), acceptance of our harvest (Cain & Abel), love of a woman (David & Uriah)... What's clear as crystal however, is that if allowed to spiral out of control, a rivalry could lead down dangerous roads.

What lengths are we willing to go to destroy our "enemy"? Why must a rivalry resort in enmity? Can't we operate in a an environment without the hostility? Be innovative while competing in business, and discover a previously untapped market, instead of focusing on your competition.

Let's look at some sport rivalries, and see how we can make the best of competition. While Ronaldo was winning a hat-trick of English Premier League titles,UCL and the Ballon D'Or, he still didn't achieve the heights of his illustrious career until he took the competition to La Liga. Watching his competition, Messi, put all his achievements under the shade, he was forced to improve his game. Start scoring 50 goals. Win more titles. Else...your competition would own you.

When the Golden State Warriors set the unwanted record, of losing the NBA finals to LeBron James' Cavaliers after taking a 3-1 lead, what did they do next? They signed the third best player in the league, Kevin Durant, to improve a team with the league MVP already on their roster. The result? They won the title back from their great rivals, and defended it this year with a 4-0 sweep. Once again,up your game.... or your competition would own you.

Roger Federer stopped playing in clay, to get better results at the end of the season and won three Glam Slams in one year. Lewis Hamilton drove to victory this weekend, beginning at 14th on the grid, and his great rival, Sebastien Vettel in pole position (driving on his home turf) somehow has seen an 8 point lead turn to a 17 point deficit.

Tiger Woods, oh dear Tiger, who hasn't won an Open since 2009, was in the lead for 38 minutes this weekend past, on the FINAL DAY of the Open (even though he's not winning the tournament, it's a great victory to even be on the leaderboard on the final day....if you've been following his story).

These stories just go to show how as an individual, you can look within yourself and realise that you're probably failing at what you're doing due to your own limitations...and not the effort of your competition. So instead of trying to derail the competition, step up your game. You don't win races by focusing on others.
