One Hit Global Superstar

Vanilla Ice? Peter Andre? Grover Washington Jr? Mack Morrison? Psy? Mr Real?..... Frank D'Nero. What do these names have in common? Well,let me save you some time....they have that ONE hit you can play over and over again. Some of these songs have earned the artist untold fame and stupendous money,but for some bizarre reason the artist was unable to translate that success into a career of back to back hits.
Now think 2Baba? Wizkid? Drake? Davido? Jay-Z? DJ Khaled?..... Adekunle Gold. Anything they touch turns to GOLD. These are global superstars in their own right, and have earned their claim to fame. Continuing to dominate the airwaves for years,and gathering fans like the legendary Pied Piper.
In my line of work I get to see some of these diverse characters up close,and notice that the GLOBAL SUPERSTAR mostly gets up in the morning ....and sprays some perfume of superiority. They've been carried away with the fame (in most cases) and don't even appreciate the fans that pay them the millions they earned. {Please note once again,that this doesn't apply to them all}. Imagine an artist asking for a bulletproof vest,before he can come on stage at Uniben yesterday. Who's trying to kill you? Ha! Fans are trying to take photos with you,and you have some tall bouncers turning them away? Are they going to use the picture to give you 'juju'? You want to use the club bathroom,and your henchmen deny EVERYONE else entry. You're a real KING. We might love your music, but we don't appreciate the attitude.
On the flip side,we have the guy who had that ONE hit. Give him a microphone anytime,and he's happy to start singing. He would continue to tell you stories of his career (like he had any😉)...people he worked with, opportunities he created for others, opportunities he missed himself and what can be done to 'improve' the music industry. Some of them can't grasp the reality that they missed out on being famous, for some of the reasons they're trying to explain to you. One thing you won't accuse them of though.... PRIDE. Humility is a cloak they wear with pride. They show fan love. Always a smile when taking 1,000 photos (na them de even ask you if you no want pictures).
So, do we dispense with the Global Superstar.... and embrace the One-hit wonders alone? The ones who go to all ends of the world to perform "Legbegbe" for their loyal fans? Or just accept that the fame gets to you eventually,and keep adoring our superstars? Tough choice...but I suggest, we enjoy their music and tell them to buzz off with their bad character.
Friday again....sadly,we are still recuperating so no outing. MTVBASE is as far as gonna get to the party. #TGIF
